Boxing Commission Addresses Ryan Garcia-Vergil Ortiz Jr. Potential Matchup
On Saturday, California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Andy Foster released a statement addressing the potential matchup between Ryan Garcia and Vergil Ortiz Jr. scheduled for August 3rd at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Foster explained that Garcia must first resolve his issues with the New York State Athletic Commission before the California commission can consider sanctioning the fight. Garcia is currently dealing with a possible suspension, fine, and a no-contest ruling following his positive tests for the banned substance ostarine after his April 20th victory over Devin Haney in Brooklyn, New York.
“The California State Athletic Commission is aware of multiple reports of a possible matchup between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Ryan Garcia on August 3rd at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles,” Foster wrote. “In the event that the New York State Athletic Commission takes disciplinary action against Mr. Garcia for the reported finding of Ostarine from a contaminated supplement, the California State Athletic Commission will honor the discipline from the New York State Athletic Commission including any license suspension.”
Foster further stated that should Garcia clear up any disciplinary issues with New York, the California commission would be happy to review the proposed matchup between the undefeated fighters. Ortiz (21-0, 21 KOs) is currently without an opponent for the August 3rd card after former junior middleweight world champion Tim Tszyu withdrew due to an injury earlier this week.
Ortiz’s trainer, Robert Garcia, told BoxingScene on Friday that they are considering WBC interim 154-pound champion Serhii Bohachuk as a likely replacement opponent for the August 3rd event.
