Boxing Fans Eagerly Await Cacace-Nunez Showdown as IBF Purse Bid Moves to July 2
The eagerly anticipated IBF junior-lightweight title bout between Anthony Cacace and Eduardo Nunez has been rescheduled, with the purse bid now set for July 2. However, it appears Cacace (22-1, 8 KOs) may seek to avoid the highly-regarded Nunez, who is considered the division’s “boogeyman.”
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the Nunez team expects Cacace, the newly crowned champion, to request an exception to instead make his first title defense on the September 21 card at Wembley Stadium. The potential opponent under the planned Anthony Joshua-Daniel Dubois heavyweight main event is rumored to be England’s Zelfa Barrett (31-2, 17 KOs), which could lead to the cancelation of the purse-bid event.
Northern Ireland’s Cacace, 35, received a hero’s welcome in Belfast after his victory over Joe Cordina for the IBF 130-pound belt on the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury undercard on May 18. However, the IBF does not permit step-aside fee arrangements, leaving the pathway to a Cacace-Nunez showdown uncertain.
Mexico’s Nunez (27-1, 27 KOs) boasts a 17-fight winning and knockout streak, with his last bout taking place in February. He will now have to wait patiently as the negotiations continue.
