Boxing News: Carlos Adames Ready for First WBC Middleweight Title Defense
LAS VEGAS – Carlos Adames, the newly crowned WBC middleweight champion, is gearing up for his first title defense on Saturday night. Facing veteran Terrell Gausha, Adames embraces the challenge of a complex opponent, having learned from his lone career loss against the crafty southpaw Patrick Teixeira in 2019.
Adames, 30, was recently elevated to full champion following the arrest and legal troubles of the former titleholder, Jermall Charlo. Despite Gausha’s (24-3-1, 12 KOs) reputation for a tricky fighting style, Adames (23-1, 18 KOs) believes he is now more experienced and mentally prepared to handle such opponents.
“Right now, I’m as physically and mentally sharp as I’ve ever been. No one can stop me,” Adames confidently stated following the undercard news conference for Saturday’s Prime Video pay-per-view event headlined by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Frank Martin.
Adames has also been engaged in social media banter with two-belt middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, who is set to defend his WBO and IBF titles against Andrei Mikhailovich on July 13 in Las Vegas. However, a unification bout between Adames and Alimkhanuly did not materialize, as Adames explained, “It was just a matter of the deal didn’t happen, so it’s a great fight for the long run.”
With veteran WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara also under the Premier Boxing Champions banner, Adames expressed his eagerness to face all comers, stating, “Janibek may be a great challenge for me, but at the same time, rack ’em up, stack ’em up, I’ll fight against anybody.”
Adames’ Focus on First WBC Title Defense
For now, Adames’ focus is on his first WBC title defense against Gausha, determined to showcase his growth as a fighter and cement his status as the division’s new champion.
“I’m excited to show everybody it’s not going to be easy to defeat me,” Adames declared. “This is a showcase of me and my title and an alert for everyone else to be on notice.”
