Australian Boxer Liam Paro Challenges Subriel Matias for IBF Super-Lightweight Title
On Saturday, Australian boxer Liam Paro will challenge Subriel Matias for the IBF super-lightweight title at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico. Paro, 28, has warned the reigning champion that he will have to force him into the brawl Matias is reportedly hoping for.
Matias’ Aggressive Style vs. Paro’s Boxing IQ
Matias, a 32-year-old Puerto Rican, has established himself as one of the most aggressive fighters in the 140-pound division. However, Paro is unwilling to engage in a toe-to-toe battle unless he has no other choice. “We’ve worked on some game plans,” Paro said. “Alfie [Di Carlo, my trainer] has the best boxing IQ in the game. I won’t share too much but obviously I’m not going to stand and trade with the guy. That’s what he’s banking on, but my boxing IQ is up there as well and we’re going to box the guy.”
Despite his preference to outbox Matias, Paro asserted that he is prepared for a fight if necessary. “If it has to be a fight, it can be a fight too, I’ve got the dog in me,” he said. “I’ve been lucky to win my other fights comfortably but I’ve got that in me and I’m ready for anything.”
Paro’s Chance at a World Title
Paro, who was denied the opportunity to challenge Regis Prograis for the WBC title due to injury, is eager to seize his chance at a world title. “There’s a world title on the line and that’s what you dream about as a kid – winning world titles – and what better way to do it than to take out the number one guy in the division?” he said.
The Australian is confident in his abilities and believes he can adjust to Matias’ style. “I can adjust on the fly. I’ve got a lot of ability and a high boxing IQ, so I just don’t think he’s boxed anyone with my style,” Paro said. “Yes, he’s boxed good opponents, and I’ve not boxed anyone like him before, so we’re going to see on the night how it all pans out.”
