Former Heavyweight Champion Believes Anthony Joshua is Regaining his Aggression
Ruiz Observes Shift in Joshua’s Approach
Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz believes Anthony Joshua is finally regaining the aggression that once defined his career, before Ruiz’s own punching power and speed upset the Briton in their 2019 clash.
“He’s getting his momentum back. He’s getting his confidence back. I think that’s the most important thing. He’s doing what he’s supposed to do. I think he’s doing his thing. I’m just happy for him.”
Ruiz, who pulled off a shock victory by dropping Joshua four times to capture the heavyweight titles at Madison Square Garden, acknowledges that Joshua seemed tentative and cautious in their rematch, which Joshua won. However, Ruiz has observed a shift in Joshua’s approach in his recent knockouts of Francis Ngannou and Otto Wallin.
Ruiz Desires Trilogy Fight with Joshua
Ruiz, who is looking to reclaim the heavyweight crown, expressed his desire for a trilogy fight with Joshua.
“I would love to have that trilogy with him. He gave me that opportunity. I gave him back that opportunity, and there’s one more. I want to become a two-time heavyweight champion of the world.”
While acknowledging Joshua’s recent success, Ruiz qualified his remarks by suggesting that Joshua’s opponents may have contributed to his improved offensive performance.
“AJ’s been doing good. He’s been taking out the guys that he’s supposed to. I’m not saying they’re super-good opponents that have really good skills.”
Ruiz Set to Face Jarrell Miller
Ruiz is set to face Jarrell Miller on August 3 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, as part of a stacked card headlined by Terence Crawford and Israil Madrimov. The Mexican-American boxer hopes to return to the ring in December following this bout, with his sights set on rematches against Joseph Parker, Deontay Wilder, and of course, Anthony Joshua.
