Broner’s Poignant Return to the Ring: Driven by the Memory of His Late Coach
In a poignant return to the ring, seasoned boxer Adrien Broner is determined to reclaim a world title, driven by the memory of his late coach, Michael Stafford. The four-division champion, now training with Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis, the trainers of fellow star Gervonta Davis, will face off against Blair Cobbs on June 7 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The bout will be broadcast on pay-per-view.
Broner, 34, has endured a tumultuous journey in the sport, marked by both success and personal struggles. Known for his out-of-the-ring antics, he hasn’t secured a world-class win since 2017, when he defeated Adrian Granados in a split decision. Nevertheless, the former prodigy remains steadfast in his quest to capture another world title, a goal he holds dear in honor of his cherished mentor, Stafford, who passed away last year.
“Coach Mike is everything to me,” Broner expressed with a heavy heart. “I promised myself before I hang the gloves up I got to become a world champion again for coach Mike and myself. That’s the goal.”
Reflecting on the significance of his world title victories, Broner spoke of the emotional impact, stating, “All my life, all I ever wanted to do was become a world champion. Every time I won one, I cried tears. I am pretty sure I’ll do the same when I win the next one.”
The upcoming bout against Cobbs (16-1, 10 KOs) is seen as a crucial crossroads for Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs), who has fought only twice in the last five years. He understands the precarious nature of the sport, acknowledging, “Boxing can eat you up and spit you out and move on to the next.”
As Broner prepares for this pivotal moment in his career, the boxing world will be watching closely to see if the former champion can recapture the glory that once made him a rising star in the sport.
