Baraou Seizes European Crown, Eyes World Title Shot
On a mission to establish himself among the elite, German boxer Abass Baraou seized a career-defining opportunity in March when he faced off against the rugged Sam Eggington for the vacant European super welterweight title.
The 29-year-old former European amateur champion had long been touted as a prodigious talent, but his technical prowess was put to the test against the relentless Eggington. Baraou, with a professional record of 15-1 (9 KOs), was determined to prove he possessed the physical and mental toughness required to thrive at the highest level.
“It became a war because I was very emotionally invested in it,” Baraou told BoxingScene. “I knew that Sam is a true warrior and I wanted to be tougher than him and to break him.”
After 12 enthralling rounds, Baraou emerged victorious, capturing the prestigious European 154lb crown. The sense of relief and accomplishment was overwhelming, as the triumph came after a frustrating three-year period marred by inactivity following his split decision loss to Jack Culcay in 2020.
“I felt incredible. There is a lot to the whole story. I became the European champion as an amateur and to also do it as a pro was a big milestone for me,” Baraou reflected.
Defending the European Title
With momentum on his side, Baraou is wasting no time, returning to the ring on Saturday night in Bolton to defend his European title against Macaulay McGowan, 20-4-2 (5 KOs). The 29-year-old from Wythenshawe presents a tough challenge, having narrowly missed out on victories against formidable opponents in the past.
“I think he will try his best to win. That will make a great fight. We’ve prepared for him and I’m ready for anything he can bring on. I like that he’s motivated. That means that we will have a good fight,” Baraou said.
As he holds high rankings with the WBA and WBC, Baraou is poised to seize the opportunities that come his way. With a growing reputation and the prestigious European title in his possession, the German boxer is confident that his time to shine on the world stage will arrive sooner rather than later.
