Abass Baraou, the New European Super Welterweight Champion, Aims to Defend His Title and Climb Towards World Glory
Abass Baraou’s journey to becoming the European super welterweight champion has been a long and arduous one, but the 29-year-old German fighter is determined to make the most of his hard-earned title. After his exciting 12-round victory over Sam Eggington in March, Baraou, now 15-1 (9 KOs), is ready to embark on the next chapter of his career.
Baraou, who won the European Amateur title back in 2017, had to overcome an early split decision defeat to Jack Culcay, inactivity, and frustration before finally getting his shot at the prestigious blue and gold belt. But now that he has tasted success, he is not willing to sit back and wait for the sanctioning bodies to move him into position for further progress.
“Becoming a champion is hard but staying a champion is harder.”
Immediately after his bruising encounter with Eggington, Baraou was back in the gym, ready to defend his title and continue his journey towards world-class glory. On Friday night in Bolton, he will make his first defence against Macaulay McGowan, 20-4-2 (5 KOs), from Wythenshawe.
Positioning Himself for World-Title Contention
The super welterweight division is in flux, with Terence Crawford set to move up from welterweight to challenge WBA champion Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles on August 3. Baraou, ranked highly by the WBA and the WBC, is positioning himself to capitalize on any opportunities that may arise in the division.
“There’s a lot of things going on. I have good momentum and I’m ready to take those fights. It’s about opportunities. If I can jump into that position, I will do it right away. I think those kind of chances will present themselves. If they need a replacement, I’m here for it.”
Fans of boxing can expect to see Abass Baraou continue his push towards the top of the super welterweight division, as he defends his European title and looks to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
