Canelo Alvarez to Defend Title Against Jaime Munguía in Highly Anticipated Matchup
On May 4th, boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez will defend his super middleweight championship at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. His opponent will be fellow Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía, as announced by the promoters on Friday.
Alvarez, the face of the sport, is returning to the ring after a decisive unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo in September 2023. Earlier reports suggested a potential bout against Jermell’s twin brother, Jermall, but those plans did not come to fruition.
The 60-2 record holder has won three consecutive fights by unanimous decision since his only defeat in over a decade – a loss to Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight bout in May 2022. Prior to that, Alvarez’s sole defeat came against the legendary Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
“Canelo Alvarez is one of the biggest names in boxing, and we’re thrilled to have him defend his title against a tough opponent like Jaime Munguía,” said the event’s promoter.
Munguía, hailing from Tijuana, Mexico, enters the matchup with an unblemished 43-0 record, including 34 knockouts. The rising star is coming off an impressive ninth-round TKO victory over John Ryder in January, widely considered the biggest win of his career. This will be Alvarez’s first Mexican opponent since facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.
The bout will be promoted by Premier Boxing Champions, who recently announced a multi-year partnership to broadcast fights on Amazon Prime Video. This high-profile showdown between two of Mexico’s top boxers will be available for fans to watch on both Amazon Prime and DAZN.
