Featherweight Rivals Clash on Cinco de Mayo Undercard
Jessie Magdaleno and Brandon Figueroa are set to face off on the undercard of the highly anticipated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Jaime Munguia bout, taking place this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Magdaleno, 32, is determined to showcase his skills and make a triumphant return to the level he was at in 2018, before being stopped by Isaac Dogboe. This will mark his first appearance in the ring in 13 months, following his defeat against Raymond Ford. The 27-year-old Figueroa, who last fought 14 months ago and outpointed Mark Magsayo, is considered the favorite going into the matchup.
However, Magdaleno is confident in his abilities and believes he holds the advantage in terms of fundamentals, ring IQ, and overall skill level. He acknowledges Figueroa’s aggressive style and high-volume punching, but insists that he can outsmart and outclass his opponent.
“He’s a great fighter, he’s a champion for a reason, but I just have more,” Magdaleno stated. “I have more fundamentals, I have more ring IQ, and overall I think I’m the better fighter.”
Magdaleno draws parallels to the 2017 clash between Vasily Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux, where Lomachenko’s superior ring intelligence and game plan execution allowed him to dominate his opponent. The veteran boxer believes that his extensive experience and high-level boxing IQ will be the keys to securing a decisive victory on Saturday night.
“My ring IQ, my intelligence, my many years in this game already – that’s what’s going to show Saturday night,” Magdaleno confidently declared.
