Boxing News: Madueno Seeks to Upset Olympic Silver Medalist Davis
On Saturday, July 6th, Miguel Madueno (31-2, 28 KOs) will look to pull off an upset against 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis (10-0, 7 KOs) in a 10-round bout. While it won’t be an easy task, Alex Camponovo, the head of CBN Promotions, believes Madueno has more than a puncher’s chance.
Madueno, 25, enters the fight with momentum, having scored an upset victory over Justin Pauldo on ProBox TV in February. Prior to that, he moved up to junior welterweight and lost a unanimous decision to Steve Claggett.
Davis, also 25, is rapidly rising through the rankings, highlighted by his February stoppage win over former two-division titleholder Jose Pedraza. However, his October majority decision victory over Nahir Albright was overturned to a no-contest after testing positive for marijuana.
“Madueno is one of those hidden talents out of Mexico,” Camponovo said. “It has taken me quite a bit of time to kind of retool his career a little bit. The good thing is that he’s a willing guy that listens and understands where he wants to go, which is one of the first battles.”
Madueno is known as a mauler who uses brute force and volume to wear down opponents, which could pose problems for the more technical Davis. Camponovo acknowledged that if Madueno can “catch you, all bets are off.”
While Davis is the favorite, Camponovo believes Madueno has a legitimate chance to pull off the upset on Saturday.
