Boxing Prospect Pero Primed for July 26 Showdown
On July 26th, Cuban heavyweight prospect Dainier Pero (7-0, 5 KOs) is set to make his return to the ring, as announced by his trainer, Bob Santos. The 24-year-old Pero, who aspires to become Cuba’s first heavyweight titleholder, will take on an as-yet-unnamed opponent at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
Discussing Pero’s upcoming fight, Santos expressed his belief that it will be a “real good step-up type fight” for his fighter. The bout may even serve as the co-feature on the DAZN card, though Santos acknowledged the difficulty in securing opponents for Pero early in his career. “It’s tough to get guys in the ring with him, too,” Santos said. “We had, like, 17 opponents turn him down. They were offering career-high paydays for those guys.”
Despite the reluctance of potential opponents to face Pero, Santos stressed that the young Cuban’s talent is evident. “You end up getting fights where it’s like, ‘Why is he even in with that guy?’ Because that’s the only guy that we could get in the ring,” Santos explained. In Pero’s last outing in April, he swiftly dispatched Jose Mario Tamez in the first round, despite Tamez’s respectable record of 4-4-1 with 1 KO.
“It’s just a matter of getting a few rounds in the bank,” Santos said, noting that Pero has only competed in 14 rounds as a professional thus far.
As Pero looks to take the next step in his professional career, Santos believes the July 26 fight will provide valuable insight into his short-term future. With significant money being offered in the heavyweight division by Saudi Arabian interests, Santos is hopeful that a strong performance from Pero will help open doors to bigger opportunities.
