Guatemalan Super Middleweight Lester Martinez Seeks Breakthrough Victory Over Carlos Gongora on Friday Night
Guatemalan super middleweight prospect Lester Martinez (17-0, 15 KOs) has his sights set on establishing himself as a top contender in the stacked 168-pound division when he faces seasoned Ecuadorian campaigner Carlos Gongora (22-2, 17 KOs) on the undercard of the Lamont Roach Jr. vs. Feargal McCrory main event this Friday night in Washington, D.C. The event will be broadcast live on ProBox TV.
Trained by the formidable “three-headed monster” team of Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, Red Spikes, and Esau Dieguez, the 28-year-old Martinez has been meticulously preparing for this critical showdown, splitting his camp between Omaha, Nebraska, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. According to Dieguez, the young Guatemalan contender is “training hard” and determined to deliver an impressive performance against his most accomplished opponent to date.
Gongora, a Tough Test for Martinez
Gongora, 35, is a well-respected contender with his only two professional losses coming against Lerrone Richards in 2021 and the surging Christian Mbilli, who is currently ranked No. 2 by the WBC and WBA, and No. 3 by the WBO and IBF. A victory over Gongora could propel Martinez towards a potential title eliminator against the likes of Mbilli or other top-ranked super middleweights.
“Winning this fight would mean a lot to me because he’s a world-class fighter,” said Martinez via translator. “It’s an opportunity toward winning a world title.”
With the super middleweight division experiencing a period of flux in the absence of champions David Benavidez and David Morrell, the stage is set for hungry contenders like Martinez to make their mark. The Guatemalan boxer is confident that an impressive showing against Gongora will significantly bolster his chances of securing a coveted world title shot in the near future.
“This win would be good preparation,” said Martinez. “It would look real good on my resume for a world title shot.”
