Featherweight Contender Bruce Carrington Eyeing Title Shot in 2025, Unimpressed by Current Champions
Brooklyn, NY | November 2023
Featherweight prospect Bruce Carrington is eagerly anticipating a world title opportunity, which he believes could come as early as next year. However, the 27-year-old fighter is not particularly impressed with any of the current titleholders in the division.
Carrington (12-0, 8 KOs) last fought at the beginning of the month, securing an eighth-round stoppage victory over Brayan De Gracia. In the aftermath, he called out undisputed junior featherweight champion and pound-for-pound standout Naoya Inoue, who is expected to move up to the featherweight class in the near future.
The rising contender was also in attendance to witness WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza knock out Sergio Chirino in four rounds this past Friday.
“Each one of them has their gifts,” Carrington said, referring to the current featherweight titleholders, “but I wouldn’t say I am impressed.”
Carrington elaborated on his assessment, stating that while he acknowledges the talents of WBO ruler Espinoza, WBA champion Nick Ball, WBC titleholder Rey Vargas, and IBF champion Luis Alberto Lopez, he does not see “generational talent” in any of them.
“It’s not any of them that reach out to me as they’re special,” Carrington explained, “but they have good gifts, and I understand why some of those guys are champions.”
When asked about his preferred opponent, the undefeated fighter made it clear that he is willing to face any of the current titleholders.
“It is anybody,” Carrington said. “Whoever is the first one to the chopping block. I’m ready to fight any one of them and become the eighth world champion from Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York.”
Carrington has fought in three consecutive 10-round bouts as he prepares himself for the championship distance. With his sights set on a title shot in the near future, the featherweight contender is determined to make his mark on the division.
