One of Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ Past Opponents in Awe of His Intimidating Transformation
In the ever-evolving landscape of professional boxing, Gervonta “Tank” Davis has firmly established himself as one of the world’s highest-profile fighters, and perhaps the finest at 135 pounds. His recent stoppage victory over Frank Martin in the defense of his WBA lightweight title has only further enhanced his reputation.
It was back in 2017 when Davis traveled to London to face the previously undefeated Liam Walsh, a bout that showcased his growing prowess. Now retired, Walsh, once one of Britain’s leading fighters, has closely followed Davis’ progress and witnessed a significant transformation in the young champion.
“The word ‘special’ is what my brother Ryan text me straight away [after the victory over Martin]. ‘He’s very, very special,'” Walsh remarked. “I didn’t get a lot of time in there with him, so I can’t talk like I’m an expert. But when I was in there it was different to anyone else I’d been in with, and I had a feeling – he needs [Vasiliy] Lomachenko, like they’re talking, and you start talking about him being an elite fighter and a pound-for-pounder.”
Walsh’s admiration for Davis’ journey is evident, as the former fighter recognizes the champion’s transformation both inside and outside the ring. “He’s got himself in a position where he can look after himself and his children for the rest of his life, so I’m a big fan,” Walsh said.
Speculation persists that Davis could be matched with Vasiliy Lomachenko, the IBF champion, a bout that Walsh believes could cement Davis’ status as an “elite” fighter. “I’m starting to think, ‘Can he beat Lomachenko?'” Walsh pondered, acknowledging Davis’ formidable power and timing as key advantages.
The retired fighter also noted Davis’ evolution as a figure, observing that he has become more “intimidating” in his approach, a stark contrast to the shy and low-key persona he displayed during their encounter in 2017. “He’s got a lot more belief in himself now; I think there was still a slight doubt in him when I fought him,” Walsh said.
As Davis continues to climb the ranks and establish himself among the very best, his former opponent’s words echo the sentiment of many boxing enthusiasts: Gervonta “Tank” Davis is a special talent, poised to cement his legacy as an elite fighter in the sport.
