Albuquerque to Host Featherweight Title Clash Between López and Leo
In a highly anticipated featherweight title showdown, reigning IBF champion Luis Alberto “El Venado” López (30-2) is set to defend his belt against the formidable Angelo “El Chinito” Leo (24-1) on August 10th at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The bout will be broadcast live across all ESPN platforms as part of Top Rank’s ongoing partnership with the sports network.
López has been on a dominant run, securing 13 consecutive victories since his 2019 loss to the then-unbeaten Ruben Villa. Meanwhile, Albuquerque’s own Leo has bounced back from a single career defeat against Stephen Fulton in 2021, reeling off four wins in a row.
López’s manager, Hector Fernandez de Cordova, acknowledges the challenge posed by his fighter’s opponent, a former world champion known for his strength and disciplined style. “This is a tough fight,” Fernandez admitted. “But I believe Venado has to come with great footwork. It could be a very easy fight or the toughest of your life. Angelo’s style is perfect for Venado’s footwork.”
The manager’s confidence stems from López’s comfortable unanimous decision victory over Joet Gonzalez last September, a performance he believes showcases his fighter’s superiority over Leo. “We all know what happened with Joet, and all due respect to Joet, but I think Leo is a better overall fighter,” Fernandez stated.
Leo last stepped into the ring in April, securing a unanimous decision triumph over Eduardo Beas. Now, the stage is set for a thrilling featherweight title clash between two fighters riding high on impressive winning streaks, with the coveted IBF championship belt hanging in the balance.
“This is a tough fight,” Fernandez admitted. “But I believe Venado has to come with great footwork. It could be a very easy fight or the toughest of your life. Angelo’s style is perfect for Venado’s footwork.”
