Boxing News: Buddy McGirt Believes Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson is the Fight to Make at 135lbs
Renowned boxing trainer Buddy McGirt has voiced his opinion on the best potential matchup at the 135-pound division, suggesting that a bout between WBA champion Gervonta Davis and WBC champion Shakur Stevenson would be the fight to make.
Davis, hailing from Baltimore, recently scored an eighth-round stoppage victory over Detroit’s Frank Martin in June. Meanwhile, Newark’s Stevenson is set to defend his title against Artem Harutyunyan on July 6, in what is expected to be the final fight of his existing promotional deal with Top Rank.
“He’s in a hot division,” McGirt told Seconds Out when discussing Davis. “He’s in a very, very hot division. I think the fight right now has to be him and Shakur Stevenson. That’s the fight. That’s the only fight that makes sense in my opinion. That’s got to be the superfight.”
The hall of fame trainer acknowledged that there are numerous other talented fighters in the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions who could potentially test Davis, but he firmly believes that a showdown with Stevenson is the fight that needs to happen.
Speculation has persisted regarding a potential clash between Davis and Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko, but McGirt dismissed the significance of an old viral sparring video featuring Davis and Devin Haney.
“Sparring is one thing, fighting is a completely different animal,” McGirt explained. “You can beat someone up in sparring; that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen in the fight. I really don’t feed off that stuff.”
