Subriel Matias Vows Knockout in Liam Paro Rematch Despite Upset Loss
Despite suffering a shocking upset loss to Liam Paro in their recent IBF junior welterweight title fight, Subriel Matias firmly believes he can knock out the Australian champion in a rematch. Matias (20-2, 20 KOs), who was previously considered a feared “boogeyman” in the division, lost via unanimous decision to the previously unheralded Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) in Puerto Rico on Saturday.
In the post-fight press conference, the 32-year-old Matias responded to his disappointing hometown defeat, stating, “> If Eddie Hearn says look you need to go to Australia and have a rematch with Liam Paro, what I will do is I will knock out Liam Paro.” Matias, who was translated by an interpreter, added, “> Do something I wasn’t able to do this evening.”
When questioned about potentially overlooking Paro, given his ongoing bickering with former titleholder Regis Prograis and being mentioned among big names like Teofimo Lopez, Matias dismissed the notion. “> No, I don’t believe I overlooked him at all,” he said. “> I just think he did his work very well.”
Matias took full responsibility for the loss, refusing to make any excuses. “> Excuses are for losers, so I am not going to make excuses,” Matias stated. “> Why am I going to talk about if, buts or maybes? You know what happened, happened.”
The boxer expressed the humiliation of losing in his home country, saying, “> It is kind of humiliating to lose at home. You’d almost prefer to fight away from home and to have everything against you.”
Despite the setback, Matias remains confident in his abilities and is eager for a rematch against the new IBF junior welterweight champion, Liam Paro.
