Alfredo Santiago Stuns World-Ranked Fierro, Sets Sights on Division’s Best
Alfredo Santiago, the 29-year-old Puerto Rican boxer, is not shying away from the spotlight after his upset victory over world-ranked junior welterweight Angel Fierro on Saturday night. Following his 10-round decision win, Santiago has made it clear that he’s gunning for the top fighters in the division, citing his past experiences as preparation for future challenges.
Santiago (15-2, 6 KOs) was a sizable underdog heading into the fight against the 25-year-old Fierro (22-2-2, 17 KOs). However, he emerged victorious with scores of 99-91, 98-92, and 98-92, showcasing his ability to handle the pressure of facing a highly-ranked opponent.
“I think I learned from great experiences, and that was, that’s what I did,” Santiago said. “I’ve also learned not to take fights on such short notice. You talk about the Devin Haney fight. I had two weeks to prepare for that fight, and I did what we did on that occasion.”
Santiago also had some choice words for Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, who promotes Fierro. “He was there in the corner with Fierro, and he was really trying to get behind Fierro,” Santiago said. “So I just said, I’m here too, and I wanted to show as well what I could do.”
Looking ahead, Santiago has a straightforward goal: He wants to fight, preferably on a major platform with wide distribution. While his recent victory may not immediately guarantee a title shot, it certainly makes him an enticing option for upcoming prospects or fringe contenders seeking a credible opponent with two solid wins.
“Listen, whoever he [Hearn] wants, whoever he [Hearn] wants to bring in,” Santiago said. “I’ll face anyone. I’ll fight anyone.”
