On the Cusp of a Homecoming Fight, Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias Vows to Deliver a “NoMastias” Performance
(Manati, Puerto Rico – March 4, 2023) – Subriel Matias, the reigning IBF junior welterweight champion, is set to put his title on the line in a highly anticipated homecoming bout against undefeated Australian challenger Liam Paro this Saturday, March 4th, at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico.
The 32-year-old Matias (20-1, 20 KOs) has been in dominant form, stopping his last five opponents inside the distance. Referencing the iconic “no mas” moment when Roberto Duran infamously turned away from Sugar Ray Leonard, Matias has vowed to deliver a similarly decisive performance, coining the term “NoMastias” to describe his intentions.
“For this fight, they expect ‘NoMastias,'” Matias declared. “We are going to show the world that the real heat is in Puerto Rico.”
The Puerto Rican champion has expressed respect for his 28-year-old challenger Paro (24-0, 15 KOs), but also issued a stern warning, recalling a past comment from the Australian that Matias found disrespectful.
“Tremendous fighter, but at some point, he said that the only thing good about me was that I was a loser,” Matias stated. “He will have to prove that with facts.”
Matias, who last fought in November 2022 with a sixth-round stoppage of Shohjahon Ergashev, will be making his Matchroom Boxing debut in this homecoming title defense. For the proud Puerto Rican fighter, the opportunity to compete on home soil as a world champion is a dream come true.
“Fighting in Puerto Rico as a world champion is like a dream,” Matias said. “It’s like waking up and being in the room with my wife and my daughters. This is something special, and I am happy with God for everything, which is the most important thing, and to continue showing that we belong at this level.”
As Matias prepares to defend his title in front of his adoring Puerto Rican fans, the stage is set for a thrilling showdown that could very well culminate in the latest “NoMastias” moment in the sport of boxing.
