Commonwealth Cruiserweight Champion Chamberlain Defends Title Against Massey at Selhurst Park
On Saturday, Isaac Chamberlain, the Commonwealth cruiserweight champion, will defend his title against Jack Massey at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park. The vacant European title is also on the line, making this a significant bout for the 30-year-old Chamberlain.
Chamberlain had previously targeted fights against Viddal Riley or Cheavon Clarke, but the opportunity to compete for the European title led him to face the 31-year-old Massey. Acknowledging Massey’s qualities, Chamberlain stated, “> He’s very physical. But we want challenges; we want big fights; we want things that’s going to make me get up in the morning and really work towards, and this was one of them.”
The bout serves as the undercard for the WBO title defense between Chris Billam-Smith and Richard Riakporhe. Chamberlain, who lost to Billam-Smith in 2022, believes the winner of his fight could be next in line to challenge the victor of the main event.
Chamberlain is confident in his abilities, stating, “> He’s a good fighter. He’s done his thing, but I’m a level above, man. He’s very tough. He has a high work-rate. He’s very strong as well. He tries to bring the heat, but my heat is better; my heat is bigger.”
The Brixton-born boxer is eager to showcase his skills and potentially secure a shot at the WBC title, currently held by Noel Mikaeljan. Chamberlain said, “> There’s been talks about [fighting the winner], but I think I’ll be number-one contender for the WBC title after this one, so I want to get the WBC title and make a massive unification [fight].”
As he prepares for the bout, Chamberlain is embracing the significance of fighting in South London, stating, “> South London is where dreams are made, and I’m very grateful for this. I’m going to give everything I can to get that win on Saturday night.”
