Adames Defends Middleweight Title Against Gausha on Davis-Martin Undercard
On March 25th, Carlos Adames will make his first title defense as the outright WBC Middleweight champion against Terrell Gausha on the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. For Adames, this matchup represents a continuation of his dominance, rather than a significant change.
The 30-year-old Dominican has been undefeated at middleweight since a surprising upset loss to Patrick Teixeira for the WBO Junior Middleweight title in 2019. Since then, Adames (23-1, 18 KOs) has rattled off five consecutive victories, four of which have come in the middleweight division. His resume boasts impressive wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and former unified Junior Middleweight champion Julian Williams.
“I’ve always had that championship mentality,” Adames stated. “So nothing has changed for me now that I am the world champion.”
His opponent, Terrell Gausha (24-4-1, 12 KOs), is a seasoned fighter best known for his 2012 U.S. Olympic appearance. The 36-year-old has also competed at junior middleweight before moving up to middleweight. Adames, however, is confident that Gausha has never faced an opponent quite like him.
“Gausha is an accomplished fighter who’s faced a lot of great opponents,” Adames acknowledged. “But he’s never been in the ring with Carlos Adames.”
Whether it was his recent promotion to outright champion or the opportunity to perform on a significant platform, Adames believes he is the best version of himself. With the middleweight division in need of a star, the Dominican champion aims to seize the moment and solidify his place atop the weight class.
“I’ve gone to another level in sparring and training camp,” Adames said. “Throughout camp, I’ve felt myself exceed all of the people I spar. That’s how I know that I’m ready for this fight.”
