Ongoing Saga of Ryan Garcia–Devin Haney Fight Continues: Golden Boy Promotions Responds to Fighters’ Payment Queries
Golden Boy Promotions issued a written response to the fighters’ online queries about their earnings from their recent bout.
Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) emerged victorious in a surprise majority decision over WBC 140-pound champion Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) on April 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, the post-fight celebration has been overshadowed by the fighters’ concerns about their payments.
In a post on X, Garcia questioned, “Still no payment, GBP [Golden Boy Promotions] and DAZN?” An hour later, Haney echoed the sentiment, simply replying, “Same.”
This prompted a formal statement from Golden Boy’s publicists, Jane Murcia and Stefan Friedman, who asserted, “As we have always done with all our fighters, Golden Boy paid Ryan and Devin exactly what they are owed under their contracts. As with all PPV events, revenue comes in over time and additional payments will be made when more money is received.“
The statement went on to suggest that the fighters may not be fully aware of the payment structure, stating, “If they aren’t aware of this fact, we would hope their managers are. Or perhaps Ryan and Devin should pay more attention to their contracts than their social media feeds.“
The payment dispute comes amid a broader backdrop of tensions between Golden Boy Promotions and its fighters. This includes the recent high-profile clash between the company’s founder, Oscar De La Hoya, and four-division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who accused the promoter of slow-paying him.
Meanwhile, Garcia’s post-fight troubles extend beyond the payment issue. The 25-year-old boxer has also faced scrutiny for being more than three pounds overweight for the Haney bout, as well as submitting positive pre-fight and “B” sample tests for the banned performance-enhancing substance ostarine. The New York State Athletic Commission is now tasked with determining Garcia’s fate, which could potentially include a lengthy suspension, a large fine, or even a change in the fight’s outcome to a no-contest.
As the saga continues to unfold, both Garcia and Haney will be closely watching the developments, hoping to resolve the payment dispute and move forward with their respective careers in the highly competitive world of boxing.
