Brandon Figueroa, a Featherweight Standout, Aims to Showcase His Versatility Against Jessie Magdaleno
Brandon Figueroa, a former junior featherweight titleholder, is set to take on Jessie Magdaleno in a highly anticipated featherweight bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday. Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 KOs) is determined to shed his reputation as a straight-ahead brawler and prove his versatility as a multi-dimensional fighter.
Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs) is coming off a loss to current featherweight world titleholder Raymond Ford in April, and Figueroa sees this as a gateway to bigger nights in the division. Figueroa, who now holds an interim title at 126 pounds, is eager to showcase his crowd-pleasing style while also demonstrating the strategic elements of his approach.
“There’s a method to the madness,” Figueroa said. “People think I just come forward and punch, but there’s a meticulousness to that. I want to confuse my opponent and not give him the same look.”
The native of Weslaco, Texas, and younger brother of former titleholder Omar Figueroa Jr., now resides in Las Vegas, where he believes he can access the best sparring to hone his skills. Figueroa’s move away from familiar surroundings and loved ones has been a sacrifice he’s willing to make in pursuit of his goals.
“You have to get out of your comfort zone, and I’m out here in Las Vegas away from family and home,” Figueroa said. “I miss my people back home, but I have to do what I have to do.”
Figueroa’s skills were on display in his previous fight, a thriller against Mark Magsayo, where he demonstrated his ability to adapt and outmaneuver his opponent. The 24-year-old is determined to build on that performance and capitalize on the opportunity to shine on a Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card.
“I’m a multi-dimensional fighter, and that’s why I’m so dangerous,” Figueroa stated, eager to prove his versatility to boxing fans and cement his status as one of the world’s best featherweights.
