Premier Boxing Champions Solidifies Featherweight Dominance with Figueroa Extension
In a strategic move, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has extended their partnership with rising featherweight star Brandon Figueroa (25-1-1, 19 KOs). This multi-fight deal positions PBC at the forefront of the stacked featherweight division, setting the stage for a highly anticipated title clash.
Coinciding with the contract extension, the World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered Figueroa, the current interim champion, to face Mexico’s featherweight titleholder Rey Vargas (36-1-1, 22 KOs) for the WBC championship. This bout, which is slated for the fall, promises to be a thrilling showdown between two of the division’s top talents.
“Figueroa, the former junior featherweight champion from Texas, earned the interim status with a dominant ninth-round knockout victory over Jessie Magdaleno on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia event in Las Vegas.”
Vargas, on the other hand, is coming off a split draw against England’s Nick Ball (20-0-1, 11 KOs), who subsequently captured the WBA featherweight title in Saudi Arabia.
The winner of the Figueroa-Vargas clash will undoubtedly have their sights set on a potential showdown with Ball, who has expressed a keen interest in either settling the score with Vargas or adding a second 126-pound belt to his collection.
Furthermore, the featherweight division may soon witness the arrival of a new heavyweight, as Japan’s pound-for-pound king Naoya Inoue (27-0, 24 KOs) is widely expected to make the move up in weight within the next year. Inoue, a four-division and two-division undisputed champion, recently delivered a stirring performance, rallying from a first-round knockdown to stop Mexico’s Luis Nery in the sixth round in front of 55,000 fans at the Tokyo Dome. Interestingly, Figueroa had an easier time against Nery, knocking him out with a seventh-round body shot in a 2021 title fight.
