Canelo Alvarez Set to Headline Cinco De Mayo Weekend Fight Card
For years, the fight date coinciding with Cinco De Mayo weekend has belonged to some of the biggest stars in boxing. In the past two decades, those main events have mostly belonged to the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo first headlined this coveted weekend in 2016, when he defeated Amir Khan. Since then, he’s been atop shows against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Daniel Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders, Dmitrii Bivol, and John Ryder.
Now, the 33-year-old Mexican superstar is set to take center stage once again on Saturday, May 4, as he faces off against Jaime Munguia in a highly anticipated clash. The pay-per-view broadcast begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and will be available on Amazon’s Prime Video, DAZN, and PPV.com, as well as through traditional cable and satellite outlets.
Canelo’s run from 2020-2021 was particularly impressive, as he won all four world titles at super middleweight in less than 12 months, dominating the likes of Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant. However, his 2022 and 2023 campaigns have been less captivating, with a loss to Bivol at light heavyweight and a less-than-thrilling trilogy fight against Gennadiy Golovkin.
Nonetheless, Canelo remains one of the biggest draws in the sport, and his matchup with the undefeated Munguia is sure to generate significant interest among boxing fans. Munguia, a 27-year-old from Tijuana, has compiled an impressive 43-0 record (34 KOs) over the past decade, and his recent wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder have elevated him to the top of the super middleweight division.
“While many fans have been clamoring for a showdown between Canelo and David Benavidez, the Munguia fight is a more than acceptable alternative. Regardless of the outcome, this should be an entertaining affair, as the two Mexican stars battle it out for supremacy in the ring.”
