Boxing Enthusiasts Anticipate Clash Between Zhang and Wilder After Losses to Parker
Zhilei Zhang (26-2-1, 21 KOs) remains wary of Deontay Wilder’s (43-3-1, 42 KOs) threat, despite the American’s lackluster performance against Joseph Parker on December 23. The two heavyweights will face off on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the highly anticipated 5 vs 5 tournament between Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry, which will serve as the undercard to Dmitrii Bivol’s WBA light-heavyweight title defense against Malik Zinad.
Both Zhang and Wilder are looking to bounce back from their respective defeats to former WBO world heavyweight champion Parker. On March 8, Zhang suffered a majority decision loss, which cost him his WBO mandatory challenger status. Wilder, on the other hand, expressed regret over being absent from the ring for almost two years before his defeat to Parker.
“I know he’s [Wilder] coming to beat me. I know he’s coming to try to win and has something to prove. So do I. Saturday night’s going to be fantastic,” Zhang said.
When asked about Wilder’s performance against Parker, Zhang admitted, “He didn’t look so good in that fight.” However, the Chinese contender still believes Wilder poses a significant threat. “He is still the dangerous Deontay Wilder from a few years ago; at least, I look at him that way,” said Zhang. “But he wants to make his comeback and wants to return. I won’t give him the opportunity.”
The upcoming bout between Zhang and Wilder promises to be a captivating clash between two heavyweights seeking redemption after their respective defeats. Boxing enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the showdown, which will undoubtedly provide a thrilling addition to the Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry tournament on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
