Canelo Alvarez’s Legacy Intact, but Critics Question His Recent Choices
Saul “Canelo Alvarez” is undoubtedly one of boxing’s all-time greats, having spent over 15 years taking on elite opposition across multiple weight classes. His impressive resume and accolades have cemented his place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. However, Alvarez’s recent reluctance to face David Benavidez, the clear top contender at 168 pounds, has drawn criticism despite his secure legacy.
Alvarez’s loss to Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight bout in 2022 was his first defeat since the 2013 clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Many saw the Bivol bout as the night Alvarez finally met his match, with the Russian fighter’s superior reach, chin, and combination punching proving too much for the Mexican superstar’s preferred counter-punching style.
In the aftermath, Alvarez seemed hesitant to immediately pursue a rematch with Bivol, instead opting for less challenging opponents such as the aged Gennadiy Golovkin, an overmatched John Ryder, and an uninterested Jermell Charlo. This shift in strategy has led some to question whether Alvarez is now more interested in protecting his legacy than taking on the toughest challenges.
Benavidez, who has established himself as the clear top contender at super middleweight, has long been calling for a shot at Alvarez. However, the four-division champion has repeatedly expressed little interest in facing the hard-hitting Mexican. Alvarez’s stated reasons, such as Benavidez’s size and power, have done little to quell the criticism that he is avoiding a legitimate threat to his dominance.
Alvarez’s supporters argue that his secure legacy should shield him from such scrutiny, as he has already proven himself against the best. Yet, the current perception is that Alvarez is more interested in easy victories than adding to his already impressive resume. Fans and pundits alike eagerly await to see if the 32-year-old will once again rise to the occasion and face his toughest challenges, or if he will continue to prioritize preserving his legacy over pursuing greatness.
