Vergil Ortiz Jr. Gears Up for Dulorme Bout, Dismisses Talk of Tszyu Fight
April 27, 2023 – Fresno, CA – Vergil Ortiz Jr. is set to face off against Thomas Dulorme this Saturday at the SaveMart Center in Fresno, California, as the co-feature of a DAZN card headlined by a junior welterweight clash between Jose Ramirez and Rances Barthelemy.
While there has been buzz around a potential August 3rd showdown between Ortiz and Australian boxer Tim Tszyu, the undefeated American’s team is urging the public not to jump to conclusions. Ortiz’s trainer, Robert Garcia, emphasized that the focus remains squarely on the Dulorme bout, and they are not looking past the experienced veteran.
“We have heard the same thing, like everybody else,” Garcia told BoxingScene. “We are focused on Thomas Dulorme. We are not looking past Thomas Dulorme.” The trainer was quick to dispel any talk of a Tszyu fight, stating, “After this fight, we can get something going, but right now it is only Dulorme.”
Dulorme, a 16-year professional, poses a significant challenge for the rising star Ortiz. The Puerto Rican fighter has faced notable names in the past, including a knockout loss to Terence Crawford in a junior welterweight title fight in 2015. More recently, he has suffered defeats against Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis.
“Dulorme is an experienced fighter, he is awkward – it is going to be a good challenge,” Garcia acknowledged. “I know Vergil, and he is definitely one of the strongest fighters I have ever worked with. So that should be the big difference, but Dulorme is a very experienced fighter.”
The August 3rd card featuring Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov for the WBA junior middleweight title has generated significant buzz, with Ortiz’s potential showdown against Tszyu being one of the most anticipated bouts on the Saudi-backed Riyadh Season event in Los Angeles. However, the Ortiz camp remains laser-focused on the task at hand, ensuring their fighter is fully prepared for the challenge of Dulorme this Saturday night.
