Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price is feeling confident and ready for her upcoming world title fight on May 11. Price (6-0, 1 KO), who has transitioned to the professional ranks successfully, will face Jessica McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs) for the WBA world welterweight title in Cardiff, Wales. This highly anticipated bout will serve as Price’s Welsh homecoming and her first time headlining her own promotion.
Despite the growing pressures and expectations that come with being a professional boxer, Price is excited to bring a big-time boxing event to her home country. “It’s great to bring big-time boxing to Wales,” Price told BBC Wales. “There’s a buzz around it, and I’m hoping it stays in Wales. If I win this fight, there’s even more big nights ahead with maybe bigger stadiums and bigger cards.”
Price, who trains at the English Institute of Sport under the guidance of Rob McCraken, has been sparring with former undisputed junior welterweight titleholder Chantelle Cameron (18-1, 8 KOs) to help prepare for her showdown with McCaskill. “We got some good rounds in,” Price said about her sessions with Cameron. “Camp is going really well, and I’m in a good place mentally and physically.”
The former Olympian is determined to perform at her best and hopes that a victory over McCaskill will pave the way for more significant boxing events to take place in Wales in the future. “I suppose there’s a different element to it because of the size of the fight, but it’s more exciting than anything else because this is what I wanted since I turned pro – with three titles on the line and boxing in front of my fans,” Price said.
