MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — American boxer Devin Haney solidified his dominance in the lightweight division by retaining his WBC title and adding three more belts to his collection after a unanimous points decision over Australian George Kambosos on Sunday.
Haney Emerges as Undisputed Lightweight Champion
The 23-year-old Haney won three of the first four rounds and maintained a substantial lead throughout the 12-round bout, emerging as the undisputed champion in the lightweight class. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110 in Haney’s favor, acknowledging his superior technical prowess before a crowd of 41,129 at the covered Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.
Heading into the fight, Kambosos, 28, held the WBO, WBA, and IBF lightweight titles, which have now been claimed by the undefeated Haney, whose record now stands at 28-0 with 15 knockouts. Kambosos’ previously unblemished professional record has come to an end, as he now sits at 20-1 with 10 KOs.
“The U.S.-based Kambosos had earned his world titles in 2019 when he defeated Teofimo Lopez, but he was unable to overcome the formidable challenge posed by the technically superior Haney in this highly anticipated matchup.”
