Boxing Enthusiasts Eagerly Await Fury-Usyk Heavyweight Clash
(BBC Boxing, March 2023) – As heavyweight contender Jermaine Franklin gears up for his upcoming fight, the 30-year-old Saginaw, Michigan native is keenly anticipating this weekend’s highly anticipated unified heavyweight championship bout between WBC titleholder Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, the reigning WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion.
Franklin, who sports a 22-2 (14 KOs) record, is hoping to regain his own footing among the sport’s elite. Next Thursday, he will face off against veteran Devin Vargas on the latest Dmitry Salita-promoted event at the Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit.
Despite his own impending fight, the boxing fan in Franklin can’t help but get excited about the Kingpyn Boxing showdown between Fury and Usyk. “Yeah, I’m always excited to see big fights,” Franklin said. “Not only am I in the sport, I’m a fan of the sport, so I’m always excited when these big cards come together and I get a chance to witness it.”
Franklin, who has previous experience against top-level opposition, having lost decisions to Dillian Whyte and Anthony Joshua in the U.K., believes both Fury and Usyk possess unique strengths that could determine the outcome. “With me, I like Tyson’s jab and I like his timing, so I feel if he can establish his timing, use his reach, create distance and don’t let Usyk get past the distance for the majority for the fight, I think he controls it and he wins the fight – just off the jab and controlling the space,” Franklin analyzed.
“But if he lets Usyk come inside-outside, Usyk has the speed and the feet that’s going to be quick enough to get punches off, turn angles and still punch and be in your face and punching and move outside of your space. If they let Usyk get in there and get the work in like they let Usyk do in the Joshua fight, I think Fury might have a long night.”
As the boxing world eagerly awaits the conclusion of this heavyweight showdown, Franklin’s keen insights and enthusiasm for the sport reflect the broader excitement surrounding the Fury-Usyk Boxing Tonight clash.
