Thrilling Mexico-Puerto Rico Clashes Headline Matias-Paro Undercard
Fierro vs. Santiago and Rivera vs. Sandoval Highlight Stacked Undercard
On June 15, the undercard of Subriel Matias’s IBF title defense against Liam Paro in Manati, Puerto Rico will feature three riveting Mexico-Puerto Rico clashes. The lineup includes Angel Fierro vs. Alfredo Santiago and Yankiel Rivera vs. Victor Sandoval, along with debut performances from newly signed Puerto Rican prospects Stephanie Piñeiro and William Ortiz.
Angel Fierro vs. Alfredo Santiago
Fierro (22-1-2, 17 KOs), a former lightweight, steps up to the 140-pound division for the first time. The 25-year-old Mexican captured a title in Puerto Rico, rallying from early knockdowns to stop former world champion Alberto Machado in the sixth round. After four successful defenses, including a split decision win in Tijuana last September, Fierro now sets his sights on Santiago (14-2, 6 KOs), a Dominican-born Puerto Rican looking to challenge at the highest level. “It will be a great fight, Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, where I come to repeat the same story from three years ago but this time much better,” Fierro declared.
Yankiel Rivera vs. Victor Sandoval
In another all-Latin clash, the undefeated Rivera (37-4, 23 KOs) of Puerto Rico faces Mexico’s Sandoval, who vows, “On June 15, there will be only one winner and that winner will be me.” Rivera expressed pride in representing Puerto Rico against a “Mexican warrior” in front of his hometown fans, stating, “We are a country of boxing. We are going to show it come June 15.”
Piñeiro and Ortiz Make Professional Debuts
Rounding out the stacked undercard, Piñeiro (6-0, 2 KOs) and Ortiz (5-0, 4 KOs), newly signed Puerto Rican prospects, will make their next professional appearances. Piñeiro challenges Mexico’s Diana Tapia for regional titles, while Ortiz steps up to six rounds against fellow Puerto Rican Luis Gonzalez.
“The main event is going to be a war, and with three Puerto Rico vs. Mexico title battles added to the card, this is going to be non-stop action from first bell to last,” said Promoter Eddie Hearn.
