Canelo Alvarez to Defend Super Middleweight Title Against Jaime Munguía on May 4 in Las Vegas
On March 9, 2024, it was announced that boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez will defend his super middleweight championship on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez (60-2) will face fellow Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) in the highly anticipated matchup.
Alvarez, regarded as the face of the sport, has not stepped into the ring since his unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo in September 2023. Initial reports suggested a potential bout against Jermell’s twin brother, Jermall, but the matchup did not materialize.
“Since his lone defeat against Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight division in May 2022, Alvarez has won three consecutive fights by unanimous decision. His only other career defeat came in 2013 when he lost a majority decision to the legendary Floyd Mayweather.”
Munguía, hailing from Tijuana, is coming off an impressive ninth-round TKO victory over John Ryder in January. This fight will mark Alvarez’s first Mexican opponent since his clash with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.
The bout will be promoted by Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), who recently announced a multi-year agreement to broadcast fights on Amazon Prime Video. This matchup between Alvarez and Munguía will be available to viewers on both Amazon Prime and DAZN.
