Australian Boxing Veteran Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne Announces Retirement
Renowned Australian heavyweight boxer Lucas “Big Daddy” Browne has officially announced his retirement from professional boxing, capping off an illustrious career that spanned over a decade.
Browne, 45, made the announcement following his recent first-round defeat to New Zealand prospect Hemi Ahio on the undercard of the Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos Jr. fight at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. Browne’s final professional record stands at 31-6 with 27 knockouts.
Despite the disappointing end to his career, Browne can look back on numerous accomplishments, including his 2016 upset victory over Ruslan Chagaev to capture the WBA heavyweight title. This historic win cemented Browne’s legacy as one of the greatest Australian heavyweights in recent memory.
“I am incredibly proud of what I’ve accomplished in the ring, and I am deeply thankful to all the fans who have supported me along the way. I hope you were entertained; win, lose or draw,” he said.
Browne’s manager, Matt Clark, echoed these sentiments, highlighting Browne’s remarkable rise from turning professional in his 30s without any amateur experience to becoming a world champion.
“Lucas Browne’s accomplishments in the ring are nothing short of extraordinary. He will go down as one of the greatest Australian heavyweights ever, and his victory over Ruslan Chagaev stands as one of the most significant moments in Australian boxing history,” Clark said.
Browne’s retirement marks the end of an era, but the sport of boxing will remember him as a true warrior who always had time for his devoted fans. As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, Browne plans to continue contributing to the sport through his gym, ensuring his impact on the sport will endure.
