Boxing Veteran Lomachenko Knocks Out Kambosos, Reclaims Lightweight Belt
Vasiliy Lomachenko, the seasoned boxing veteran, delivered a resounding message on Sunday morning in Perth: Don’t count him out just yet. The 36-year-old former lightweight champion knocked out George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round, reclaiming a coveted lightweight title and solidifying his place among the sport’s elite.
Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) put on a punishing display, cutting Kambosos (21-3) above the right eye and battering the former champion with a barrage of creatively delivered, powerful blows. The knockout victory revived Lomachenko’s status as a prominent player in a stacked lightweight division filled with gifted young champions.
“He’s after Frank [Martin], let me get Frank first,” unbeaten WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis said on social media as Lomachenko completed his dominant performance.
With Davis headlining a high-profile pay-per-view card in Las Vegas next month, Lomachenko also has his sights set on WBC titleholder Shakur Stevenson, 26, and the expected new WBO champion, 29-year-old Emanuel Navarrete.
Top Rank Promoter Eyeing Lomachenko vs. Stevenson
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum expressed his desire to pit Lomachenko against Stevenson, though Stevenson’s future with the promotional company remains uncertain after his upcoming July 6th bout.
Lomachenko’s victory over Kambosos was particularly impressive, as the rugged Australian had previously eluded the grasp of current 140-pound champions Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez. With Kambosos fading in the 11th round, Lomachenko seized the opportunity, delivering a devastating liver shot that dropped the former champion. Kambosos attempted to get up, but Lomachenko quickly followed up with two more powerful blows, prompting the referee to stop the fight as Kambosos’ father threw in the towel.
Lomachenko’s sharp performance from the opening bell, coupled with his dominant fourth round in which he outlanded Kambosos 21-1 according to CompuBox, showcased the veteran’s enduring skills and determination to reclaim his place among the sport’s elite.
