Jaron “Boots” Ennis to Restart Promising Career with Matchroom Debut Against Cody Crowley
Jaron “Boots” Ennis is set to reignite his promising boxing career as he makes his debut under the Matchroom banner. The undefeated welterweight will face off against Canadian boxer Cody Crowley at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on July 13.
Ennis, who signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom last month, has the International Boxing Federation’s welterweight title, which was awarded to him in November after the organization stripped Terence Crawford. With Crawford’s recent move up to the junior middleweight division, Ennis sees an opportunity to unify the 147-pound title.
Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, Ennis’ new promoter, believes the 25-year-old is now the focus of all the key players in the welterweight division. “Everyone in the welterweight division, I think, is now looking at Boots,” Hearn said.
The long-term goal for Hearn is to eventually match Ennis up against Crawford, who has been at the top of the pound-for-pound debate since his stoppage of Errol Spence Jr. last July. Hearn acknowledged that Crawford will demand a significant payday to take on the undefeated Ennis, but believes the fight can happen due to Crawford’s new relationship with Saudi Prince Turki Alalshikh.
In the meantime, Ennis will look to continue his unbeaten streak against Crowley, a tough Canadian opponent, as he takes the first step in his journey to unify the welterweight titles and potentially secure a showdown with the legendary Crawford.
