Usyk’s Promoter Bemused by Alalshikh’s Claims About British Fighters
Promoter Alexander Krassyuk has expressed bewilderment over Turki Alalshikh’s recent claims that British fighters are the best in the world, ahead of the highly anticipated unified heavyweight championship bout between Oleksandr Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs) and Tyson Fury (34-0-1, 24KOs) next month.
During a press conference last week in Morecambe, the influential Alalshikh made the comments while Fury spoke to the media ahead of the undisputed heavyweight clash with Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 18. Alalshihk, who did not attend the event, phoned in and praised Fury, expressing his opinions on UK fighters.
Krassyuk, who has promoted unified champion Usyk throughout the Ukrainian’s professional career, has voiced concerns about possible favoritism towards WBC world heavyweight champion Fury following Alalshikh’s remarks.
“His Excellency mentioned that British fighters were the best in the world, but he omitted the fact that the future undisputed heavyweight champion had a Ukrainian passport,” Krassyuk told World Boxing News. “Mr Alalshikh is a great, honorable man and a big fan of boxing. It is his right to choose his favorite in the biggest fight of the century. We respect him a lot and trust that this boxing match will be contested at the highest level of integrity and sportsmanship. However, we have taken care of the selection of the officials. Those selections will be made on mutual approval,” Krassuyk insisted.
