Vasiliy Lomachenko Faces High-Stakes Comeback Bout Against George Kambosos
As Vasiliy Lomachenko prepares for his upcoming world title fight against George Kambosos, the Ukrainian boxing icon acknowledges that his illustrious career is nearing its end. The 36-year-old will square off against Kambosos this weekend (May 12) for the vacant IBF lightweight title, seeking to bounce back after his loss to Devin Haney last May.
Lomachenko, once considered among the sport’s pound-for-pound best, recognizes that his prime years may be behind him. The veteran boxer entered the professional ranks later in life, prioritizing a second Olympic gold medal before chasing world titles. However, he made up for lost time, becoming the fastest fighter to win titles in three weight classes, accomplishing the feat in just 18 fights.
Now, after over a decade as a professional, Lomachenko is honest about the limited time remaining in his storied career. “If you are talking about ages in boxing … I’m [an] old man,” he told Fox Sports Australia. “But my career is almost done, of course. How many years it’s going to be, one, two, three, that’s it. But I still think I have a little bit of power.”
The wear and tear of competing above his natural weight class for six years has taken a toll on Lomachenko’s body. Facing much larger and stronger opponents at lightweight, he has suffered recent defeats to Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney, which have made it increasingly difficult for the veteran to recover after fights.
“At this stage, every fight is hard. It’s hard to recover after fights. I don’t know what will happen with my body after this fight and that’s why I can’t give you an answer to this question [of when I will retire],” Lomachenko acknowledged.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Lomachenko remains focused on the task at hand, determined to reclaim championship glory against Kambosos. As the Ukrainian boxing legend enters the twilight of his career, his upcoming bout carries immense significance, both for his legacy and his aspirations of securing one final world title.
